After months of back and forth and rumors, it has finally been confirmed that Hugh Grant and Renee Zellweger are returning for the fourth installment of the iconic Bridget Jones franchise.
Renée Zellweger will become a cougar in a fourth Bridget Jones film co-starring Leo Woodall, to be released next Valentine’s Day. Mad About the Boy, a 2013 novel by Helen Fielding, will be adapted for the big screen in the fourth movie.
Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson will also make cameos in the eagerly awaited sequel, along with Leo Woodall, a newcomer.
Hugh Grant, a British actor, will play the stylish Daniel Cleaver once more. The fourth film will not feature Colin Firth’s return.
In addition to Grant and Zellweger, Emma Thompson is in the cast; she appeared as Bridget’s physician in the third movie in the series.
Leo Woodhall, who starred in One Day and The White Lotus, will also feature in the cast.
Woodhall is reportedly set to play a dashing 30-year-old whom Bridget begins having affairs with after she starts dating again.
Michael Morris, the film’s director, will helm the screenplay written by novelist Fielding. It should be mentioned that a man will be leading the project for the first time.
While Beeban Kidron directed the second film, Sharon Maguire directed the first and third.
Helen Fielding created the persona of Bridget Jones, the eternal singleton. Fielding’s 2013 book Bridget Jones’s Diary: Mad About the Boy, which follows the 51-year-old single mother of two kids as she navigates dating in the age of social media and dating apps, will serve as the basis for the newest sequel.
Writer Helen Fielding stated on Desert Island Discs that she was “staggered” by the “sexism” in the original films and that “you could not write that now,” suggesting that the new film may take a different turn.
What happens in Bridget Jones 4?
Although not much is known about Bridget Jones 4, a production-related source has revealed that the fourth movie will feature a “devastating twist” as Bridget deals with the difficulties of raising a grown son.
On Valentine’s Day in 2025, the Universal project will launch on OTT screens through Peacock. International viewers will be able to stock up on big tubs of popcorn when it opens in theaters.
