The BBC soap opera Yolande will center on Patrick in early May after he learns that her close friend and confidant, Pastor Gideon Clayton (Howard Saddler), has sexually assaulted her.
Yolande will speak out about the assault in the two-hander episode that airs on May 7, and Patrick will process the events while offering support.
“It felt right to produce an EastEnders two-hander episode when you have talents like Angela Wynter and Rudoph Walker and you have a story that deserves time and space to explore,” said Chris Clenshaw, executive producer of EastEnders.
“This is the most difficult conversation Yolande and Patrick will ever have, and we get to tell this story honestly and authentically by dedicating an episode to them.” I am amazed by Angela and Rudolph’s performances and how they handled such a difficult and delicate subject.”
The End Violence Against Women Coalition and the elder abuse charity Hourglass have collaborated with the soap opera on the plot.
The narrative “helps dispel myths and stereotypes about what victims and survivors look like and how perpetrators behave, and ultimately increases understanding of sexual assault,” according to Andrea Simon, director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition.
“Black women, older women, and other marginalized groups are at the sharp end of this, with huge consequences for their access to justice and support,” the speaker continued. Television programs have the power to influence public opinions.”
