O.J. Simpson was a father of five before his death at the age of 76. The former NFL player shared three children, Arnelle, Jason, and Aaren, with his first wife, Marguerite Whitley, and welcomed two kids, Sydney and Justin, with his second wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.
From his athletic career to his position as the main suspect in Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder, O.J. Simpson’s life was put to the test on both positive and negative levels by fame.
But his relationship with his children was the one thing that never really stole the show.
When O.J. passed away from cancer, all of the former football player’s kids were there to support him. “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” his family revealed. His kids and grandkids were all around him.”
In this period of change, his family kindly requests that you honor their requests for discretion and dignity.”
The offspring of the former football player have all been able to maintain a low profile following their well-known father’s “trial of the century.”
“As a family, we recognize he is not the perfect man, but as a man and a father, he has done his best,” stated Arnelle, O.J.’s eldest daughter, in an interview. Arnelle also maintains a close relationship with her mother, occasionally sharing photos of the two on her private Instagram account.
In an interview with NBC’s Katie Couric in 2004, he called his children “well-adjusted.” But that doesn’t mean his relationships with his five kids didn’t have their ups and downs.
While some of his children have shown support for him, others have distanced themselves from him.
Nicole Brown’s kids loved their dad
Many people questioned whether O.J. Simpson’s relationship with his children—Sydney and Justin in particular—would change after he emerged as the top suspect in Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder.
According to CBS News, O.J. reportedly stated, “The bottom line is there are people out there who think their opinion of me is going to supersede the well-being of my kids.”
And my children’s welfare is my only concern.”
Although O.J. Simpson spent years in the public eye, he did not want his children to experience the same thing. The former football player tried to keep his kids away from the media to protect them.
He said in an interview that he finds it challenging, but he typically keeps his children out of everything.
