British racer Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE HonFREng competes in Formula One for Mercedes and has also driven for McLaren.
Along with holding the records for the most wins (103), pole positions (104), and podium finishes (197), Hamilton is tied with Michael Schumacher for the record seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles.
Hamilton announced his retirement from the Australian Grand Prix due to an engine issue! Mercedes has acknowledged that Lewis Hamilton had to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix due to an engine problem.
What happened to Lewis Hamilton?
Lewis Hamilton stopped his Mercedes W15 with what appeared to be an engine failure, forcing him to retire from the Australian Grand Prix.
Only a few laps after Max Verstappen was also forced to retire from the Australian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton’s engine blew up.
After taking the lead early on, Red Bull racer Max Verstappen lost it to Carlos Sainz. Then, as one of his brakes caught fire and melted the back-right corner of his car, the race was over.
Ten laps later, Hamilton was the second competitor to withdraw from the race. Over the radio, the seven-time Formula One champion reported an engine issue; however, it soon transpired that his power unit had completely failed.
Ferrari was in a great position to capitalize on the retirements. Following Verstappen’s retirement, Sainz held a comfortable lead, with teammate Charles Leclerc following closely behind him following the first round of pit stops.
Lewis Hamilton is out of the Australian Grand Prix
The seven-time world champion questioned Mercedes’ choice to start him on the red-striped rubber over the radio before the race had even started, which led to the reliability issue after Hamilton had stopped early after starting on soft tires.
Hamilton’s stoppage made him the second retirement of the day in Melbourne after Max Verstappen stopped with a rear brake issue on his Red Bull RB20, ending the reigning World Champion’s hopes of matching his record of 10 straight wins.
After being eliminated from Q2 on Saturday, Hamilton qualified a distant 11th, capping a miserable weekend with his first DNF of the season.
In 2024, who will Lewis Hamilton drive for?
In his last season with Mercedes before moving to Ferrari in 2025, Lewis Hamilton has said that he and his squad are “mega-motivated” for the 2024 Formula One season.
