We cannot just brush off the idea because of Sel’s 2017 relationship with The Weeknd. Videos and posts relating the episode scenarios to Gomez’s real-life experiences have been widely shared on social media.

Both Selena Gomez and Jocelyn, the lead character in The Idol, made their acting debut as young children on well-known children’s television. Gomez rose to fame for her portrayal of Alex Russo in Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place, whereas Joss’s acting background—while secret—is crucial to the development of her character.

Selena and Joss both assert that they are being portrayed as “chaotic” or “going crazy” because they chose to use Live to spread their message. One of the most heartbreaking moments on the show occurs when Tedros tricks Joss into starting a live video where she tells viewers she wants to be open and honest with them about her life.

In the eyes of fans, Theresa Mingus is Gomez’s Leia. Mingus, as opposed to having a makeup line, has a swimwear line called La’Mariette, which Gomez models and actively promotes through photo shoots and Instagram posts.

In the first episode of the series, Jocelyn struggles as she attempts to pose topless for her album cover.  Gomez created the topless album cover for 2015’s “Revival,” which sparked controversy from both critics and fans. “I am not going to let them get to me,” she declared at the time on the radio. 

In the same photo shoot for the album cover, Jocelyn is seen sporting a medical bracelet. Her team claims that showing off the bracelet will make her fans more sympathetic to her.

During the photo shoot for the promotional video for her comeback single, “Bad Liar,” Gomez was seen lying on a bed in nothing but her underwear and sporting a hospital bracelet. Petra Collins, the shoot’s photographer, urged Gomez to continue wearing the bracelet.

There were some raised eyebrows when Selena’s song “Bad Liar” featured “moaning sounds,” which one blog described as “whiny, orgasmic noise,” before adding, “Nothing says try-hard like a randomly placed moan.” The Weeknd’s Tedros forces Joss to make real moans on a song that was recorded while the two were inseparable in The Idol.
