Is Stephen Colbert leaving CBS? A look into the reality

Amidst the swirling rumors and speculations about talk show hosts and their future plans, one name has remained steadfast at the helm of late-night television: Stephen Colbert.

As one of the most prominent figures in the entertainment industry, Stephen Colbert has carved a unique place for himself with his wit, humor, and incisive political commentary.

In this exploration of reality, we look into the career and personal life of this multi-talented comedian. But before we go into the present, let’s journey through the life and accomplishments of this remarkable personality.

Who is Stephen Colbert?

American comedian, writer, producer, political analyst, actor, and television host Stephen Tyrone Colbert is a multifaceted individual. His birthday is May 13, 1964.

His most well-known roles were as host of the satirical Comedy Central show The Colbert Report from 2005 to 2014 and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS from September 2015 to the present.

Although Colbert had trained as a dramatic actor, he developed an interest in improvisational theater while attending Northwestern University, where he also met Del Close, the director of Second City.

Colbert began his professional career at Second City Chicago, where he worked as Steve Carell’s understudy. There, he met comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he co-created the sketch comedy series Exit 57.

Before working again with Sedaris and Dinello on the television series Strangers with Candy, he wrote and performed on the Dana Carvey Show.

Is Stephen Colbert leaving CBS?

No, Stephen Colbert is not leaving CBS. There is no disappearance of the King of Late Night. Through 2026, Stephen Colbert will continue to host The Late Show.

Speaking at the Banff TV Festival, CBS CEO George Cheeks disclosed that the network and the comedian had extended their contract for the comedian to continue hosting their highly regarded show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, for an additional three years.

This year was his current contract’s expiration date. At a panel moderated by Deadline, Cheeks stated, “We just extended him for three more years and I was praying for that to happen.”

Although The Late Show is one of the late-night shows that has been hit by the writer’s strike—all of late-night is essentially dark—Cheeks said that before the strike, The Late Show was “absolutely crushing it”.

David Letterman’s successor, Colbert, had previously extended his contract, which ran from September 2019 to August 2023.

Following a rough beginning in which The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC defeated the show, Colbert found his footing in 2016 with the ascent to the presidency of Donald Trump.

Chris Licht, the now-former head of CNN, joined at the same time as an executive producer. Cheeks laughed and quickly changed the topic when asked if Licht had asked for his old job back during the keynote panel in the Canadian Rockies.

The agreement to retain Colbert occurs as CBS’s late-night programming is undergoing change. After eight years in the slot following Colbert, James Corden made his farewell appearance on his final Late Show in April.

The Late Late Show is being replaced with a reboot of the former Comedy Central series, Midnight. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is an episode produced by Colbert, Jon Stewart, and Tom Purcell.

Is Stephen Colbert married?

Yes, Stephen Colbert is married. Evelyn McGee-Colbert was the woman Stephen Colbert was destined to marry; he realized this right away.

The pair first met at a musical and wed in October 1993, before the talk show host became a household name.

In the years following, Stephen and Evelyn welcomed three children and have also collaborated on a few projects, as Evelyn is a talented producer.

Stephen has acknowledged that The Late Show continued to film during the COVID-19 pandemic, in part because of his wife.

While accepting an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special in 2021, Stephen remarked, “As soon as I get through all of this, I am going to call my wife to celebrate because she was a huge part of this past year and this night, too.”

From their first meeting in a theater lobby to raising three children, they have made a happy and loving family.
