One of the most recognizable characters in Emmerdale history, Zoe Tate (portrayed by the late actress Leah Bracknell), arrived in the Dales in 1989 and is regarded as a classic character. She lived with her father, Frank Tate, stepmother, Kim Tate, and brother, Chris, in their family mansion, Home Farm.
In the famous village, she worked as the local vet alongside Paddy Kirk. Additionally, her Emmerdale character was the first to come out as gay.
She was a passionate supporter of animal rights and often rubbed the locals up the wrong way.
Zoe won them over, and once she was qualified, she set up a successful practice with Paddy Kirk. Zoe encouraged Jamie Tate, Zoe’s half-brother, to go to Emmerdale to work in the clinic and pursue veterinary training.
What happened to Zoe Tate in Emmerdale?
She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and died in 2019
Zoe’s downfall started when she murdered her brother, Liam Hammond, after he held her captive. Chris Tate then tried to help her cover up the killing, but they were unsuccessful. Fortunately for the veterinarian, the jury determined that her actions constituted a lawful killing during her trial, and she was acquitted.
After going through a depressive episode and setting the local church on fire, she was later diagnosed with schizophrenia. By 2006, Zoe had had enough and had moved away from Emmerdale to start a new life in Australia.
Callum Rennie, the estate manager at Home Farm, and Zoe broke the gas pipes at the house and drove off in her famous exit scene.
