The sports drama “All American” has earned a spot as one of the CW’s best shows, with the recent fifth season being the series’ most drama-packed outing yet.
“All American” is produced by Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios in association with Berlanti Productions.
Nkechi Okoro Carroll serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Greg Berlanti, Jameal Turner, Sarah Schechter, Mike Herro, and David Strauss.
What happened to Coach Baker on All-American?
Billy Baker died unexpectedly during All American season 5, episode 11, which left the show’s characters and viewers grieving.
Billy was a central part of the show and was a pillar of mentorship and support for Beverly High School and South Crenshaw High School.
It was heartbreaking to watch, but it made sense that Billy Baker needed to be killed off when Taye Diggs, who played the role, was ready to leave All-American.
Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll said that since he would never “leave after fighting so hard for his family,” it was the only logical plot. But after Billy Baker passed away, it appeared that the character would never be able to return.
It has been confirmed, though, that Billy Baker will appear during season 6 of All American. Although Billy’s method of doing so has not been revealed, it is most likely going to involve flashbacks or characters speculating about what life might be like if Billy were still alive.
As discussed above, Season 5 will not be Billy Baker’s last appearance. Diggs revealed that his character will return in a spectral form for “All American” Season 6, when he will serve as a phantom mentor to Spencer, Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), and anyone else in need of guidance from the afterlife.
Billy Baker Didn’t Die in Real Life
All American takes plenty of creative liberties when it comes to telling Spencer Paysinger’s story, including Coach Baker’s death in season 5.
The fictional character’s death was not based on something that happened in the NFL player’s life. Instead, the series included the devastating Billy Baker death in season 5 because Taye Diggs was ready to say goodbye to All Americans.
In an interview, Diggs stated, “I was having a great time. I merely followed my instinct when I felt ready to go. It was maybe the mid-fourth season.
I don’t even remember, to be honest, because me and the showrunner [Nkechi Okoro Carroll] are close. We’d been keeping in contact, so she knew, and we’d been talking. We also decided on storylines and other details, so everything was done legally and everyone was informed.”
