Robert Saleh was fired by the New York Jets, which was an unexpected move. While Saleh was on the hot seat, the shocking factor is they did it in the season after just five weeks. The major question becomes what is next for the future of the Jets head coaching position. While there is plenty of speculation about who it could be, one outcome solves two issues at once.
Deion Sanders’ appointment as head coach will address the first concern. Sanders is an impactful coach, which is now being showcased by the Colorado Buffaloes 4-1 start to 2024. This is a huge start for Colorado, bouncing back in the way they did after going 4-8 last season, and a large portion of that is due to the type of coach Sanders is. Being a former player, he can understand things from a player’s perspective.
That is where the Jets come into play. There was plenty of discussion about scapegoating and dysfunction under Saleh, and the Jets needed someone to change the culture. Sanders’ style would be appropriate for that.
Is Deion Sanders going to the Jets?
While there have been some whispers that Sanders might sign a contract with the New York Jets in 2024, there has been no official confirmation.
With superstars Travis Hunter, Shedeur, and Shilo Sanders scheduled to depart for the NFL, Colorado has stated that they hope to have Deion Sanders remain at the school for many years.
In his second season as head coach of the Buffaloes, the former NFL player turned college football coach is leading the team to an impressive 4-1 start. His son, Hunter, is a do-it-all star who could be selected first overall, and he is playing well.
Some had anticipated that Deion would leave and look for another opportunity given that those two, along with his son Shilo, were scheduled to depart this offseason. The school intends to retain him, though.
Rick George, the athletic director of the University of Colorado, expressed his hope that Sanders will remain at Colorado for many years to come and that he will complete his coaching career there.
Arguments in favor of Deion Sanders joining the New York Jets
Firstly, Deion can handle expectations and the media after two years and the numerous changes he brought to Colorado. Even though the team’s performance on the field disappointed in 2023, the coach did not back down from expressing his opinions.
Another major reason is that his polarizing style attracts many talents. You know he is there, whether you like him or not, and that goes double for everyone in the NFL and college football worlds.
