Nathan Fillion from The Rookie will make another appearance in a superhero film. The actor has been cast in James Gunn’s eagerly anticipated Superman Legacy movie from the DC Studios.
What does this, however, mean for his upcoming role in a police drama? Is Nathan Fillion leaving The Rookie? Here are the things we do know.
Nathan Fillion Joins “Superman Legacy”
The DC Universe will be relaunched with Superman Legacy under the direction of James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Pictures and director of DC’s Suicide Squad and Marvel’s highly successful Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
On July 11, 2023, Vanity Fair revealed that Superman Legacy’s main cast had grown by three new actors, who would each portray a DC superhero. Green Lantern Guy Gardner will be played by Fillion, Hawkgirl by Isabela Merced, and Mister Terrific by Edi Gathegi.
David Corenswet, who will play Superman (Clark Kent), and Rachel Brosnahan, who will play Lois Lane, are already confirmed to appear in the upcoming superhero movie. The movie is expected to begin production in January 2024.
The world of superheroes is nothing new to Fillion. He has portrayed numerous characters in the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes, most recently Master Karja in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and The Detachable Kid in The Suicide Squad, both of which were directed by Gunn.
He also acted in the comedic superhero film Super and provided voices for characters in the animated superhero movies The Death of Superman, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Justice League: Doom, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Wonder Woman, and others.

Future of Nathan Fillion in “The Rookie”
It is also important to remember that Fillion most likely agreed to a typical six-year contract with The Rookie. If that is the case, even with his best intentions, he might find it challenging to skip the upcoming season.
It will depend on whether he chooses to renew his contract or whether he continues to be involved after Season 6. The Rookie pays Fillion between $1.4 million and $2.2 million per season, according to Celebrity Net Worth, which we previously mentioned pays the actor about $100,000 per episode.
Since the show’s first season in 2018, Fillion has played a prominent role. He portrays the title character, John Nolan, the oldest rookie and Police Officer III at the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. Additionally, he oversees the series’ executive production.
In 2018, Fillion explained to The Hollywood Reporter why he was drawn to the role of Nolan, a newly divorced man in his 40s who accidentally assisted the police in stopping a bank robbery and then relocated from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a police officer.
