British soap opera Coronation Street was developed by Granada Television and debuted on ITV on December 9, 1960.
The show is set in the fictional town of Weatherfield, which is based in inner-city Salford, England, and has a cobblestone, terraced street at its heart.
Produced at MediaCityUK by ITV Studios, the successor to Granada, Coronation Street airs in all ITV regions. On February 7, 2020, the program debuted its 10,000th episode, and a year later, it celebrated its 60th anniversary.
Who is Roy Cropper in Coronation Street?
Much-loved character Roy Cropper joined Coronation Street in July 1995. The Weatherfield community gathers at his cafe, Roy’s Rolls, for a cup of tea and a bacon buttie.
Actor David Neilson was cast as Roy after Corrie writer Stephen Mallatratt recommended him. The pair were already close friends, and the actor helped to “mold the character” of Roy.

No, there is no suggestion that Roy is set to leave Coronation Street.
Actor David Neilson has also revealed how he’s “enjoying” Roy’s latest storyline. Speaking in an interview, he said, “It’s a compliment but at the same time a responsibility.
“Even though I like to spend time with my family and watch my grandchildren while Roy is working on bits and pieces in other people’s scenes, I am prepared for when things suddenly become busier.
“One thing I like about it is that it leaps back 29 years to 1995, when Roy first arrived. The actor continued, saying, “It reminds me of the early Roy Cropper days when people thought he was creepy and had misgivings about his behavior.
“And he will be held accountable for everything that has ever happened, even the abduction of their foster child. All that makes this storyline interesting.”
Why is Roy Cropper in prison?
Roy is in prison awaiting trial for the murder of Lauren Bolton, who went missing in early 2024.
After inadvertently cleaning the missing woman’s apartment, the cafe owner suddenly found himself a prime suspect. He was then arrested and charged with her supposed murder.
Following the discovery of a weapon, human tissue, and blood at Lauren’s apartment, police declared they had sufficient evidence to find Roy guilty of killing her.
This left detectives convinced that she had been killed and that Roy was the murderer.
