Call The Midwife is a BBC period drama about a group of midwives who worked in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s.
The series is produced by Neal Street Productions, a production company created and produced by director and producer Sam Mendes, Call the Babysitter producers Pippa Harris and Caro Newling.
The 1st series, set in 1957, premiered in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2012. Call the Midwife received high ratings from its first series, making it BBC One’s new drama since 2001.
Overall, 12 annual series, comprising 8 episodes each, are broadcast each year, and a Christmas special has been broadcast every Christmas since 2012.
The 13th series is currently being broadcast. In the United States, it is also broadcast on the PBS network.
As of 20 February 2024, 111 episodes of Call the Midwife have aired, currently in its thirteenth series. In February 2023, the BBC renewed the series through to a fifteenth series, keeping the show on the air until at least 2026.

What happened to Trixie in “Call the Midwife”?
The series 13 finale of Call the Midwife saw Trixie struggle with the stress of her marriage to Matthew. Call the Midwife fans were shocked during the finale when Matthew left Trixie and their son.
This came just 12 months after their romantic wedding at the end of series. Faced with an impossible ultimatum, Trixie (Helen George) chose not to follow him.
Instead, she opted to stay behind with their son Jonty (Archie O’Callaghan). Matthew says his goodbyes and left in episode 7.
Speaking of their final scenes together, Olly Rix said it was “genuinely very moving on the page”. He added: “It was something we found quite emotionally exhausting to do.”
During the scenes, Matthew told Trixie: “We’re still married and we still have a future together.”
Rumours have been rife that actor Olly Rix has left the BBC One series for good. The 39-year-old telly and theatre star has played property developer Matthew Aylward since 2020.
According to reports, Olly previously hinted that his character might not be in it for the long haul. “I didn’t know the show wanted me until 2026,” he said.
