Hart Hanson created Bones, an American police procedural comedy-drama television series for Fox. It premiered on September 13, 2005, and ended on March 28, 2017, with 246 episodes spread across 12 seasons.
The show is centered around forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology, with each episode focusing on a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) case file about the mystery of human remains brought to Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a forensic anthropologist, by FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).
All 246 episodes of Bones, which aired on Fox from 2005 to 2017, are now available on Hulu, but the one-season premiere may not be rewatchable due to its emotional impact. Yes, the one with Dr. Lance Sweets.
What happened to Sweets on Bones?
On the television show Bones, the character Lance Sweets, portrayed by John Francis Daley, met a tragic end during the season 10 premiere.
Sweet was a popular member of the show’s main cast. While Bones is known for its grisly murders, it rarely featured the shocking deaths of main characters, making Sweets’ demise all the more surprising for fans.
The circumstances surrounding Sweets’ death were linked to the show’s ongoing storyline. In the previous season, David Boreanaz’s Agent Seeley Booth was attacked at home by three members of a high-level government conspiracy.
Booth fought off his attackers, but he was eventually arrested and charged with the murder of three FBI agents. The true perpetrators were revealed to be part of a larger governmental plot to frame Booth.
At the start of season 10, Booth was imprisoned, while the rest of the team, including Sweets, worked tirelessly to uncover the truth about the conspiracy and clear Booth’s name.
However, before they could make significant progress, Sweets died unexpectedly.
Why did John Francis Daley leave Bones?
Sweets died because John Francis Daley left Bones to pursue other opportunities. Despite Daley’s decision to leave the character, the hit series, and all his castmates (including former Angel star David Boreanaz) behind, there don’t appear to be any hard feelings from the cast or crew.
Aside from Bones, actor-turned-director John Francis Daley made a significant contribution to the world of writing and directing for film.
Daley’s writing credits after leaving Bones include Spider-Man: Homecoming and Game Night. In 2023, he continued his success with the action fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
In this case, despite the abrupt departure, both Bones’ and John Francis Daley’s careers appear to have ended happily.
In an interview (via TVLine), Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan shed some light on the situation shortly after the season 10 premiere.
“It was a complex and difficult decision for us…” There were many tears shed on set. We adore him. He is an important and respected member of the family.
It was incredibly painful to lose him. Hopefully, that pain will translate into something positive for the show going forward.”
