Massachusetts-based rock band Aerosmith has announced that they’re retiring from touring and cancelling their farewell tour due to lead singer Steven Tyler’s vocal injury.
The band said on social media, “We have always wanted to blow your mind when we perform. Steven’s voice, as you are aware, is a unique instrument.
He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice back to where it was before his injury. We have seen him struggle even with the greatest medical staff at his disposal. Regretfully, it is evident that he will never fully recover from his vocal injury.
We have decided to retire from touring as a band of brothers, which has been devastating and challenging but necessary.”
After suffering a vocal injury at a concert in September of last year, Tyler initially declared he would not be able to sing for the following 30 days.
However, the injury was “more serious than initially thought,” so Aerosmith had to later announce that the tour would have to be postponed.
Beginning in Pittsburgh on September 20, the band was scheduled to continue their farewell tour, making stops in Philadelphia, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, and New York thereafter.
In addition, they were scheduled to perform a “hometown show” at Boston’s TD Garden on New Year’s Eve, but Tyler’s injury forced them to postpone it.
We are appreciative of the thousands of talented individuals who have contributed to our historic runs, and our crew.
As always, I want to thank you, my fans. Play our music loudly from now on. The group continued in their statement, “You have fulfilled our aspirations.”
What happened to Steven Tyler’s voice?
The 76-year-old singer Tyler has been enduring persistent issues with his larynx and vocal cords that he is unable to recover from.
After learning that Tyler’s vocal injury was “more serious than initially thought,” Aerosmith decided to postpone their farewell tour, which was scheduled to begin in September 2023.
The band announced their retirement and promised refunds to all those who purchased tour tickets. At the time of the postponement, Tyler said he was “heartbroken” to push the tour.
On September 10, 2023, Tyler was hurt during the third show in New York. He “sustained vocal cord damage,” which “led to subsequent bleeding.”
