Since the popular serial killer show Criminal Minds: Evolution was revived, fans are wondering, when and if Spencer Reid will return. According to a recent episode, it is just a matter of time.
The seventh episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution’s second season made numerous allusions to previous characters, including Reid, which strongly suggested that his comeback was imminent—especially when weighed against other characters from the past.
In 2020, Criminal Minds came to an end after 15 seasons. Two years later, in 2022, the show returned, albeit without the entire cast.

What happened to Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds?
Despite making an effort, Reid was among the characters who failed to make a reappearance in Criminal Minds: Evolution.
Unfortunately, Matthew Gray Gubler, who played the role, was unable to participate in the revival series due to other scheduling conflicts.
Viewers have hope because Gubler has made odd remarks about Criminal Minds, and showrunner Erica Messer frequently discusses the possibility of his return.
Reid’s return to Criminal Minds: Evolution may happen sooner rather than later now that season 3 has been confirmed.
Matthew Gray Gubler has starred in two television shows, Dollface and King Knight, since the conclusion of Criminal Minds.
Emily discloses that Reid is merely taking a break from the BAU
Remember, Emily didn’t say that Reid left the BAU.
Emily said, Reid was on sabbatical, rather than saying he left the BAU, leaving the door open for Reid to return in Criminal Minds: Evolution.
Additionally, it implies that Emily, as unit chief, has communicated with Reid regarding the possibility of his return to the BAU.
The BAU team could certainly use Reid’s help with the “Gold Star” case, but, for now, it’s great news that he hasn’t officially left the team like other characters.
Reid does not have to collaborate with the BAU team in Criminal Minds: Evolution to be on the show, even though his sabbatical suggests there may be a chance for him to rejoin them.
One thing needs to happen before Reid and Morgan return to Criminal Minds: Evolution, according to Messer. The two fan favorites could always make a reappearance, she said, but
“At this point, the only thing that could bring anybody back would be an emotional pull rather than casework.”
Reid’s sabbatical from the BAU team in Criminal Minds: Evolution has been confirmed, but that does not mean it has to end for him to make an appearance.
Considering what Spencer has experienced throughout his 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, this is good news for his character.
Additionally, since there have been numerous instances in which Spencer should or could have returned, it would make his return more rational and poignant.
