2024 has been quite a roller coaster during the first few months. It is a year where a lot of us are waiting for the world’s evils to finally come to an end, without mentioning any specific significant changes in the film and television industries, the state of social media, or the widespread erosion of democracy in the major powers of the world.
While bad news continues to dominate the conversation, folks can find solace in changes at Rodan and Fields.
Known for delivering proven results in skin care and hair care through science-backed, dermatologist-created products, R+F currently has the number-one lash serum and number-on premium acne treatment in the U.S. A 2022 U.S.
Brand Tracker Report states that R+D beats peer averages by double digits in important functional benefits like producing the best products.
What happened to Rodan and Fields?
In 2024, Rodan and Fields declared an extension of their business plan.
Rodan and Fields have long been criticized as a pyramid scheme. The company has been selling its wide and growing range of skincare products using a non-salaried workforce since rebranding with multilevel marketing back in 2007.
The only funds promised were commissions on sales made by the sellers and any additional partners they enlisted. In this case, the payment always gets back-funneled back to whoever is at the top of the pyramid.
R+F has operated under this model for years, with many across the internet lambasting the company for using its blatantly exploitative business strategy. However, they made a major announcement about their business model.
On July 15, 2024, R+F issued a press statement stating that “the company will move away from the multi-level direct selling model to streaming the customer and consultant experience.”
Commencing on September 1st, the new model intends to market and sell its products through “traditional channels and social media.”
Stated differently, the company approaches product sales in the same manner as any other brand.
It is said that existing “consultants” will be transferred to a new affiliate program where their commissions will be increased according to each individual’s sales performance.
R+F has reorganized its corporate structure and eliminated approximately 100 roles as part of the evolution of its business model.
A WARN notice filed in the state of California in September 2023 states that there were 76 layoffs at R+F’s Bay Area office in addition to this.
