Leonard, who was born on September 13, 2002, in Mobile, Alabama, played football in high school at Fairhope Secondary School before going on to Duke University.
He had 1,900 throwing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 500 rushing yards as a senior in high school.
Leonard participated in seven games as a freshman recruit for Duke, starting one and completing 37 of 62 passes for 381 yards with a score and an interception.

Riley Leonard suffered an ankle injury while being stripped by Howard Cross III. On Duke’s final offensive play, When Leonard fell to the ground, Cross rushed in from behind, placing a large portion of his weight on his lower legs.

As teammates assisted Leonard off the field, he could only put a very small amount of weight on his hurt leg. A short while later, Leonard came from the medical tent using crutches.
