On June 16, 2017, Matt Hughes was involved in a serious car accident near Raymond, Illinois, causing life-threatening injuries. He underwent extensive treatment and a long recovery process afterward.

Hughes was shattered against a railroad crossing at about noon, and a train mangled his car just before noon.

After being taken from the site of the crash to the Springfield hospital, the doctors observed the brain bleed of Hughes and put him in a medically-induced comatose.
