Loris Sven Karius is a German professional footballer who plays goalkeeper for Premier League club Newcastle United.
Karius played for Germany’s youth national teams. Karius began his career at VfB Stuttgart before joining Manchester City in 2009.
Since 2022, Karius has been in a relationship with Italian television presenter and model Diletta Leotta. In March 2023, they announced that she was pregnant with their first child.
The couple became engaged later that year, and Leotta gave birth to their daughter in August 2023.
Karius has previously been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, having made two critical errors in Liverpool’s 3-1 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.
That was his final game for the Reds, and he was subsequently sent on loan to both Besiktas and Union Berlin, before making the move to the Magpies as an experienced back-up to the currently injured Nick Pope and Dubravka.

Eddie Howe selected Karius to play because Dubravka was ill. He has not played in the Premier League since May 2018, when he was still playing for Liverpool, and his first appearance for the Magpies came in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United last season.
Howe revealed on Karius’ selection, saying: “Loris has trained daily for a long period. He had a slight shoulder injury at the start of the season, but since then, he has been fine. He has participated in games behind closed doors, so he is match-ready.
“The last game he played was the cup final, so he is used to big games, and he had many big games at Liverpool, so I have no doubts about his temperament, and we are relying on his big-game experience.”

If Dubravka’s illness does not improve, Karius hopes to play in Newcastle’s next FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday. Their next Premier League match is against Wolves next weekend.
Has Loris Karius played for Newcastle?
Karius has only appeared in one game for Newcastle since joining, a friendly against Al Hilal over the winter break. That means he has not played a single minute of competitive football in less than two years.
That will change in the Carabao Cup final, though, as Nick Pope is suspended and Martin Dubravka is cup-tied.
