Klay Alexander Thompson is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Golden State Warriors in the National Basketball Association.
He is widely regarded as one of the greatest three-point shooters of all time, having won four NBA championships, five NBA All-Stars, two All-NBA Third Team honors, and being named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
Likewise, he has also won gold medals for the United States national team in the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
Golden State selected him as the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft. Thompson and teammate Stephen Curry set an NBA record in 2014 with 484 combined three-pointers in a season.
After missing over two and a half years of play, he returned in the middle of the 2021–22 season, where he won his fourth title in 2022.
Thompson is known for his offbeat, dry sense of humor and owns an English bulldog named Rocco. As of 2024, the net worth of Klay Thompson is estimated to be around $70-$80 million. He is one of the most prestigious NBA players. His basketball career provides him with the majority of his income.
What happened to Klay Thompson?
Klay Thompson, the Golden State Warriors’ star, was a late scratch against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night due to an illness, despite not being listed on the injury report.
About 30 minutes before tipoff, the Warriors announced that Thompson had been ruled out. The sharpshooting veteran has not had the best year.
Thompson averages 17.6 points per game in 2023-24, shooting 42.1% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc.
This is a tough break for the Warriors, as they were set to use the Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, and Draymond Green starting lineup that they believe can be their first consistent starting group all season.
Thompson’s late scratch alters not only Golden State’s starting lineup but their entire rotation, as now the bench unit is impacted with Podziemski sliding into the starting group.
In Thompson’s absence, the Warriors will rely on Steph Curry and Andrew Wiggins to provide additional offense.
Curry is coming off a 46-point performance in Golden State’s double-overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Thus, the superstar guard should have no problems taking on an increased load. Meanwhile, Wiggins is having his lowest-scoring season, but he scored 22 points in Saturday’s loss.
He is an x-factor that the 76ers will have to keep an eye on.
The Warriors’ season has been a roller coaster, with poor performance exacerbated by player availability issues. Hopefully, his illness is minor and he will be able to return to court soon.
The Warriors have been monitoring Klay Thompson daily. His next opportunity to play will be on Friday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
If he is unable to play against the Grizzlies, he should be available for the Warriors’ game against the Hawks on Saturday.
