Johnson, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 100th class in 2020, was instrumental in the Dallas Cowboys’ two consecutive Super Bowl victories.
From 1989 until 1994, he served as team captain. He was named to the position on February 25, 1989, the day after Jerry Jones, a teammate from his time in college, purchased the franchise.
He was appointed head coach of the Miami Dolphins three years later, in 1996, and during his four seasons in that position, he guided the team to the playoffs three times. After the 1999 season, he left the organization.
Following his resignation from the Dolphins, the head coach took a brief vacation before returning to his position on FOX in 2002.
He was a two-time Super Bowl champion head coach and the 1990 AP Coach of the Year for the NFL. In addition, he is one of just six head coaches in league history to have guided a team to consecutive Lombardi Trophies.
Johnson had a regular-season overall record of 44-36 and a postseason record of 7-1 while serving as the Cowboys’ head coach.
His 44 victories rank third all-time for the Cowboys, and his seven postseason triumphs are second only to the 20 victories of Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry.
The 79-year-old head coach concluded his career with an 80-64 record and nine postseason appearances. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s centennial class 2020.
