Is Hailey Van Lith leaving LSU?
Following LSU’s loss to Lowa in Elite 8, where she was repeatedly cooked by Caitlin Clark and clowned online, Hailey Van Lith is leaving LSU after just 1 season.
Van Lith might not play for LSU again next season, as the Tigers and the college basketball community understood when the team’s season ended on Monday.
That option was predicated on the idea that she would have opted to re-enter the transfer portal rather than declare for the WNBA draft. Given the way Van Lith discussed the choice following the Iowa loss, it even appeared as though she was leaning in that direction. Still, it was decided to go with the latter.
Van Lith had to act quickly because, according to WNBA regulations, a player who is eligible for the draft must declare by April 1.
It is possible for participants in the NCAA Tournament who make it to the Elite Eight or beyond to renounce their NCAA eligibility and submit a draft declaration 48 hours following their last game.
Additionally, the fact that Van Lith did not make the announcement yesterday removed the possibility that she would run it back to the Tigers.
She decided not to enroll in the class that will comprise Stanford’s Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso of South Carolina, Clark, and teammate Angel Reese.
After Monday’s loss, Mulkey spoke positively about Van Lith’s contribution to LSU this season, saying that she was “forever indebted to Hailey and her unselfish play.”
“I hope it’s not her last game. Nevertheless, after LSU’s defeat by Iowa, Mulkey praised Van Lith, saying, “I am honored to have been her coach for a year.” She’s got another year if she wants to come back.
