The New England Patriots took Ryan Mallett in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was Tom Brady’s backup quarterback for the Patriots from 2011 to 2013 while he was there. Mallett spent the majority of his time with the Patriots as a backup, seeing little action on the field.

Mallett was acquired by the Houston Texans in a trade that year, giving him the chance to contend for the starting quarterback job. Throughout two seasons (2014–2015), he made a total of six starts for the Texans, but his time as a starter was marred by accidents and erratic performance.
