One of the most cherished movies in recent memory, The Sandlot, starring James Earl Jones as Darth Vader, also starred Mike Vitar. Vitar had a promising acting career as Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez, but for some reason, he stopped it. Mike Vitar is a man who has dedicated his life to his family and to becoming a firefighter, as per friends and family.
How old is Mike Vitar (Benny) now?
As of 2023, Mike Vitar (who portrayed Benny Rodriguez) is 44 years old. Mike took birth on Earth on the 21st of December 1978.
When he was 12 years old, he gave a boost to his career. He was discovered by a casting manager who was already searching for talent. The casting director noticed Vitar when he was waiting in line for a ride at his school’s carnival.
Early roles in Sunset Grill and Brooklyn Bridge
A little appearance as a young child called Arturo in the 1991 drama movie Diplomatic Immunity served as Mike Vitar’s debut performance. Bruce Boxleitner, who was still well-known for his performance as Alan Bradley in the Disney movie Tron from 1982, appeared in the movie. Nearly 30 years later, in the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy, Boxleitner would return to that character. In 1991, Vitar appeared in a Brooklyn Bridge episode.
Before Mike Vitar was given additional work on a feature picture, it had been over two years. He performed the role of Boy in the 1993 movie Sunset Grill. But this one would lead him to his most well-known character, Benny The Jet.
What happened to Benny Rodriguez from Sandlot?
Mike Vitar moved away for an unknown cause, though one may speculate. Vitar started a new profession as a firefighter in 2002. He started much earlier, in 1996, when he started working for a California ambulance service in Torrance.
Mike Vitar as Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez
He was immediately hired by the Los Angeles Fire Department after receiving his EMT certification. He still resides in Los Angeles with his spouse, Kym Allen, the accomplished photographer, whom he wed in 2006. The couple shared three offspring.
Who among us has not watched The Sandlot? Okay, so if you haven’t already, you should go have a look if there are any. The 1962 drama centers on Scott Smalls (Tom Guiry), a fifth-grader who moves with his mother (Karen Allen) and stepfather (Denis Leary) into a Los Angeles neighborhood.
The Sandlot Plotting
Small’s mother almost drags him outdoors to make friends with some of the local youngsters to overcome his shyness. Smalls finds himself at the baseball diamond where a group of youngsters are playing. They are short ones, so they ask Smalls to play to make up the difference.
Smalls (“You’re killing me, Smalls”) isn’t a baseball player, which is unfortunate. He is embarrassed even more by his inability to catch or even toss a ball. Except for Benny the Jet Rodriguez (Mike Vitar), who has natural skill and is widely regarded as the greatest in the region, the team’s boys make fun of Smalls.
Even though Smalls can’t play to save his life, the lads in the sandlot start to like him over time. A hotshot squad of little leaguers who believe they can just walk all over the sandlot guys challenges the team, bringing the team even closer together. They quickly discover they can’t.
The Sandlot serves as a reminder of simpler times. Children wouldn’t have to worry about the dangerous outside world while playing outside all day. A baseball signed by The Great Bambino, George Herman Ruth, female lifeguards (hello, Wendy Peffercorn), a monstrous dog chasing Mike Vitar’s Benny through their little neighborhood, and other troubles plagued them.
There is an odd tidbit regarding The Sandlot that has nothing to do with Mike Vitar: 20th Century Fox, the movie’s distributor, and the filmmakers were sued for slander. In 1998, a man by the name of Michael Polydoros filed a lawsuit against them, alleging that Chauncey Leopardi’s portrayal of the character Michael “Squints” Palledorous was offensive and caused him excessive embarrassment and disgrace. David Mickey Evans, the author, and director of The Sandlot, attended the same high school as Polydoros.
The court ruled in favor of the filmmakers after the case was tried in court. The Supreme Court was then asked to hear the case, which it originally declined to do. But ultimately, the Supreme Court reversed course and dismissed the review.
