As a member of the Countdown crew for 30 years, lexicographer Susie Dent has been a fixture in the renowned Dictionary Corner on the Channel 4 game show since 1992.
Without Susie, Countdown would not exist. Fortunately for us, she still enjoys sharing all of her wordy knowledge with contestants and viewers, just as she did when she first joined.
There are two things that have kept me there. The first is that, without being overly corny, it is like a family. It is highly uncommon in TV series, and staff turnover is slow. Several members of the camera crew have been there for nearly as long as I have, and our producer Damien was a contestant once.
“The format is the other thing, because it is all about the numbers and the letters, and you can not help playing along, regardless of who is working on the show.”
Regarding the thing that would cause her to reevaluate her countdown future, she stated, “I cannot imagine what it would be.” People sometimes ask if I get bored because it seems like a very repetitive thing that I’m doing, but it’s honestly not.

For more than five years, listeners have been entertained by Susie and Gyles Brandreth’s show, Something Rhymes With Purple. However, during the latest episode, both stars confirmed the show would be ending after five years.
She said, “It makes us both sad and excited. We will keep the incredible community updated on our plans and future destinations, but there will be more developments.
“It is not the end, but it is.”
